Sterling Aventura provides a welcoming and supportive environment to its residents, with a high staff to resident ratio, to ensure and deliver kind, respectful and attentive care to its residents. Its physical appearance is lovely – our uncle’s apartment was light and bright, the outside patio area, lobby social areas and dining room are all pleasing but it is staff’s willingness to go the extra mile to support the residents and their families that sets Sterling apart. We had only two days to find an appropriate living environment for our uncle after hospitalization. Mark Monahan arranged for an assessment the following day in a Miami Beach hospital and arranged for his safe transport to Sterling. Our uncle was offered a fully furnished apartment used for temporary “respite”, but he liked it so much, that it was made available to him on a permanent basis so that he would not suffer the anxiety and stress of moving again. Night staff woke him and took care of his morning needs at 4 or 5am at his request, so as not to disturb his regular routine. He liked the food and the dining room. He really enjoyed the daily afternoon live music and was there every day he was able, with Daniel’s help. We appreciated Shayna Perry’s watchful eye and the positive approach of the doctors, occupational therapists and other health professionals who provide services to the residents at Sterling. Our uncle told us the staff were nice and took good care of him. He was a fiercely independent person, who never wanted to leave his apartment, so his praise was meaningful. When it came time, we were guided into the hospice system, where trained hospice workers attended our uncle’s side 24/7 at his Sterling apartment. Since we could not be at his side because of the pandemic, every day, family members and my uncle’s closest friend could call Daniel’s personal cell phone, and Daniel (the activities director!) would call back from our uncle’s room so we could talk to him. We send out our greatest thanks to the amazing staff who do everything they can and then some to care for the residents and assist their families, and to Mark Monaghan, Anthony Ferro, Shayna Perry and Executive Director Mary Buchanan for their caring and capable oversight. And of course, to Daniel, whose kind and extraordinary efforts made all the difference in the world to our family.
