Assisted Living FAQs
Not sure if assisted living is right for you? It is normal for anyone considering assisted living communities to have questions about what level of care they need. To help, we put together this list of answers to the questions we are most frequently asked.
What is assisted living?
Many adults need help with the tasks they do every day, such as dressing or personal care, but are otherwise largely independent. Assisted living is a living option that meets those needs while preserving the individual’s independence. Assisted living typically occurs in a senior apartment community that includes private or shared apartments, dining and security monitoring.
Does assisted living provide licensed medical care?
Moving to an assisted living community is a big change, and it’s essential to choose the right community to limit disruption. Before making a decision, you should consider the community itself, the housing offered, price and amenities. At The Sterling Aventura, we’re available to help you make the right decision. Download our free resource guide to learn more and we'll help you find the option that best aligns with your needs.
What is an Assisted Living Facility?
Assisted living communities are residential communities for adults requiring some daily support. For example, someone may be able to live independently as long as they have assistance with preparing nutritious meals, taking prescriptions properly or addressing hygiene needs. In addition, residents of assisted living communities have access to transportation services, social activities and staff available 24/7 for both non-emergencies and emergencies.
What Does Assisted Living Provide?
Assisted Living residents live in fully furnished apartments equipped with easy-to use intercoms and alert buttons that can connect them with staff. Meals, housekeeping, laundry and transportation services are provided for residents. The community also plans regular outings to a variety of interesting and fun events that residents can enjoy with their friends and neighbors.
Memory care and dementia care services are available for an additional cost in assisted living communities for residents who have Alzheimer's disease or mild to moderate memory issues. Memory care offers a higher level of assistance with routine and daily tasks, as needed.
Does Medicaid Pay for Assisted Living?
Medicaid does not cover all expenses associated with residing in an assisted living community. Florida's rules regarding Medicaid coverage for the costs of assisted living that involves medical needs does help reduce monthly expenses, but it will not pay for room and board. We realize how complicated it can be to navigate guidelines regarding what Medicaid or Medicare pay for in regards to senior care. Contact our experts at The Sterling Aventura today, and we’ll help you find the right payment option for assisted living.
What is the Difference Between Assisted Living and Nursing Homes?
The difference between assisted living communities and nursing homes is the medical care and supervision that a resident requires. Nursing home residents cannot live independently and require assistance with nearly all daily tasks, from getting out of bed to using the bathroom and eating meals. Residents of assisted living communities may need help with a few tasks, but can otherwise live independently. Another difference is the level of privacy. Assisted living communities provide home-like apartments for residents, but nursing homes are more like dormitories where nurses and trained staff can constantly monitor residents to ensure their safety and well-being.
